What should I know before buying a fridge?
There’s a lot to consider when buying a fridge. It's easy to become overwhelmed with choice! So many brands, models, sizes and features. Therefore, having a rough idea from the outset will go a long way toward a purchase that fits your circumstances. There’s nothing worse than buying a fridge that is too small, doesn’t fit or opens the wrong way!
- First off, grab a tape measure and measure up the space you want to place the fridge. Write down the maximum height, width and depth of the space. It's a good idea to keep a bit of space around the fridge to assist with air flow. The fridge will last longer.
- How many people will need the fridge? Larger families may need a larger capacity fridge
- Define your budget? This will keep you focused on searching for those fridges within your range.
- What is your style?? Modern fridges come in a variety of finishes, colours and styles.
- Technology. Think about what matters. Energy efficient fridges save you money in the long run. Fridge touch screens and internal fridge cameras save you time whilst shopping.Â
- Features. Consider which features are most important. Frost free, ice dispensers, water dispenser, crispers, remote control using smartphones, etc...
What should I know before buying a bar fridge?
Compact in size, bar fridges are great when space is limited which actually makes them very versatile. They can be used under benches in an outdoor kitchen, in a home drinks bar , in caravans and boats (equiped with the necessary 12V inverters), in offices, bedrooms, sheds, workshops and more. They are relativley inexpensive and they make great gifts. Though small, they tend to be less energy efficient than their much larger counterparts. Its important not to overfill bar fridges because they need air cirulation to keep things cool. Therefore, craming them full of food and drinks its actually counter intuitive where it will work harder and won't cool as expected. Consider which way you want the door to open with some of them able to adjust the hinges to open from either side. Consider also if you will use it outside with some bar fridges better suited to outdoor use. Make sure you measure the space you want to go so that you buy one that fits.
What is a bottom Mount Fridge?
Bottom Mount fridges have the freezer compartment at the bottom of the fridge. This is ideal for someone that cooks mainly with fresh produce as all fresh products are at eye level. The freezer compartment often has pull out draws making the frozen goods easier to access. Bottom mount fridges are built by brands including Beko, CHiQ, Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel, Haier, Hisense, Kelvinator, LG, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung and Westinghouse.
What is a Top Mount Fridge?
Top mount refrigerators have the freezer at the top which is ideal for someone that uses frozen goods in their day to day cooking. With many different styles, from stainless steel finishes or a classic white option, you are sure to find the fridge that matches your kitchen. It is important to consider size before purchasing the fridge. Capacity starts at around 200L, all the way up to 699L fridges for larger households. Ensure you keep a bit of extra space on the sides for plugs. Warranties range from 2,3 or 5 years with some very energy efficient top mount fridges that are cheaper to run. The better top mount fridge brands include Beko, CHiQ, Haier, Hisense, Kelvinator, LG, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung, Teco and Westinghouse.
What is a French Door Fridge?
French door fridges are very spacious and are designed for bigger households. They are wider which allows for wider shelves creating even more space for storage. The later models are finished in a beautiful silver, grey or dark grey stainless steel. Very elegant. Featuring 3-4 doors, most french door fridge capacity ranges from 500L to around 800L. Most of these fridges come with a minimum warranty of 2 years while some go up to 3 or even 5 years. Brands such as Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel, Haier, Hisense, LG, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung and Westinghouse have amazing french door fridges.
What is a side by side Fridge?
These are a more traditional type of fridge that have 2 doors which are side by side, one being a fridge and one being a freezer. They are especially handy for large families with larger capacity requirements. The side by side fridge is a single unit which is different from a pidgeon pair where the fridge and the freezer are each individual units which fit alongside each other. A side by side fridge is ideal when you need about the same amount of freezer and fridge space. It has compartments for easy organisation and accessibility.
What is an upright fridge?
Upright fridges don’t have a freezer compartment. They are a fridge only. Handy for those who just need fridge space. They range from 200L to 599L capacity. The better brands include Beko, CHiQ, Hisense and Westinghouse.
