Oakey Electrical Celebrates 50 Years Proudly Serving Their Local Community

Oakey Electrical is celebrating their 50th birthday this month, having served their local community of Oakey and surrounds since 21 June 1971.
Opened by Peter and Mary Langton, Oakey Electrical initially began life as a service business delivering appliance repairs, installations and more to the local community. Peter and Mary were soon contacted by their local Electrolux rep and began their journey retailing appliances.
“They started with one fridge and one stove,” says Andrew, the Langton’s son and current owner/operator of Oakey Electrical, describing the humble beginnings of the now booming business.
In 1974 the business evolved with a shop front being purchased and opened, at the address Oakey Electrical at 104 Campbell Street, which is still their current address to this day. In 2010 Andrew and Nicole Langton took over the business, and while they’ve stayed at the same address Oakey Electrical has changed with the times. Originally dealing in the old ringer washers (you know the ones!), they were there for the introduction of colour televisions, and they’re still here with cutting edge TV tech and washers you can connect to your smartphone.
In the past few years, Oakey Electrical has further expanded into the online space, which has helped drive huge growth in the business. Very active on social media, Oakey Electrical engages with their friends and fans online, and earlier this year they proudly launched their own website. Driving these changes was Oakey Electrical’s talented and passionate Store Manager Courtney.
Andrew attributes much of their continued success to the staff at Oakey Electrical, with the team operating under the ethos of the original business values of “Always looking after our customers and backing up product sales with service”. These small-town values with modern business strategies have proved to be a winning formula for success.
“The business has seen huge growth over the last few years,” Andrew explains “we’ve gotten quite big online.”
Oakey Electrical was a member of the Retravision Group before its collapse in 2012. They were the last store to receive the very coveted “Store of the Year” Award in 2011 and also bag five other awards that same year. Andrew and Nicole took over the business in 2010 and switched to their present home of the Bi-Rite Home Appliances group, who they’ve been with for the past 10 years.
In 2020 Oakey Electrical received a major revamp including new exterior signage and painting. Along with this renovation, Oakey Electrical also proudly became a Jaycar Authorised Reseller.
Oakey Electrical is proud to be an active part of their local community providing sponsorship to many of the local sporting clubs and other organisations. As it goes in business, there have been ups and downs in the retail industry over the last 50 years, but Oakey Electrical is still here today proudly serving the community with further plans of expansion into the future.
